The replacement of my drive units was completely driven by Tesla Service - I did not ask for the replacement, in fact I only mentioned that I heard a little whine, almost unnoticeable and only occasionally when taking it in for an annual - Tesla Service recommended replacement - My guess is it was a shim issue which did not render the car undriveable, but Tesla was certainly proactive -
